Holiday Season approaches!

Hello all.

I have not done much with the website since before Thanksgiving. However, I see that a new Gedcom file is available and several new members are getting ready to join the forum.

I hear the GEDCOM now contains over 10,000 names of our family tree! That is an awesome accomplishment. Look for an update in the next few days.

New Members, be sure to both submit your genealogical information (family tree data, names of your forefathers, etc.) to fill in the GEDCOM FORM on the Contact Us page. NOT the webmaster form, which is the default. I have forwarded those which were sent to me by mistake. Once Joe Clarkson Carpenter makes sure you fit in the family tree, then he will let me know to activate your forum membership.

Remember, you will also need to go to the Forum page yourself and REGISTER for the Forum.

I also hear that some new photos will be coming to the Photos section of the website soon as well.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Now Available! Research from Deb Wake

I was reminded recently of an oversight on my part. A while back my old laptop died and when I moved the Genealogy data over I had not yet tacked the problem of what to do with some research data sent to me by genealogist, Deb Wake. Most of her data was in the form of scans of historical documents. At the time, I had not enough disk space on the web server to host those images, and converting them to text was a sticky problem.

Well, not long ago, I shelled out some significant money for a subscription to a premium online image gallery service, known as SmugMug. That is now integrated into the web site, and allows me to host a virtually unlimited number of images. Now those old storage limits are no longer an issue and I can host much more information and photos than before. If anything, I look forward to the challenges of what to do with it all. That assumes of course that people actually submit material and photos to the website, which happens not nearly as often as I would like, but I am learning to be patient.

The Research from Deb Wake is now hosted in the Descendants of George Zimmerman Image Galleries, and I will be working on the Mary McCormick's partial transcription of John Carpenter's Will.

I also want to thank our esteemed cousin, Sandy Kassen, who reminded me that these documents existed in my repository, but had not yet been made available online. I would like to assure her and everyone else that was an oversight only. I now have everything posted.

I will comb though that old laptop hard drive and see if there might be a sliver of data still unhosted, but I have shared everything I have. That is my intention, and that is the purpose of this project.

Thank you all for your support.

Reality Check: Time, Quality, and Money... Pick Two

I recently received a message from a woman in the family who is frustrated that on the Articles page there are references to material that has not yet been posted. Specifically, the items listed as "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" under "Research from Deb Wake" on the Articles page.

Her question was, "While we really appreciate all of your technical information, it boiled down to the question of why should people send on manuscripts, etc., to you, when you have several that we'd like to see, i.e. Pennsylvania Germans, that you don't copy onto the site. ... We understand that there is a huge technical knowledge for putting together a family site, but unless the earliest entries are addressed, for the rest of the family searching the site, it becomes a "who cares?", since earlier entries were never printed. "

I can imagine how some things might seem to move slowly with regards to this website. I am doing most of this work alone, and it is done after hours for the most part.

So, I will just say that I have posted EVERYTHING that I have in my possession, with this one oversight, which I will now correct. The purpose of this website is to share everything that people choose to submit. There should be no doubts that everything that is sent to me will be shared in a reasonable time, considering the constraints of my life, and the technical limitations imposed by the Internet itself.

The material from Deb Wake had quite frankly fallen off of my personal radar, so I am actually glad for the reminder. It is to Deb Wake that I owe an apology for the oversight.

The question posed by our frustrated cousin does also bring up the larger question, which is... How does this web site work?

The non-technical answer to "How does this web site work?," goes to the three variables that drive any project: Time, Money and Quality. Anyone who works with these variables can tell you that of the three, you get to pick just two.

This information our cousin asked about was sent to me on CD a long while back by Deb Wake. When she sent it, eighteen months ago, it was not even possible to post that much data on the website. We simply did not have the technical capacity to do it.

At the end of Summer 2006, I started a paid subcription to the SmugMug Online Image Gallery service and now I can host images there. It works great and has unlimited capacity. I have also purchased other tool since those early days to help me host this website, because I am committed to the rightness of this project.

Other real life variables are the fact that my previous laptop expired, and we had the long run up to the 2006 Reunion in Kentucky. There was enough work to keep me busy for months, and so the question of what to do with Deb's research got put on a back burner.

When I redesigned the website the last time, around early September ... lets see... about 45 days ago... these inactive references to "Research from Deb Wake" were posted as dead links to server as a reminder to myself that I needed to get that research posted. It fell on to the, "When I get a chance," list. Even at that time; however, it was not technically possible to publish all of those images.

Time passes... And now I do have that SmugMug service at my disposal, and now I can post those images where they can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Those of you who know me, you know that I never accept "Busy" as a reason, and I consider it a poor excuse. People who tell you they are "too busy" are really just telling you that other things are more important to them. The point is that I will never tell you I did not get something done because I was too busy. But I will tell you that I am a busy man, and projects like the family web site get relegated to the back burner often. I do need to sleep occasionally.

The web site and the genealogy projects in general tend to run hot and cold. When they are hot, there is plenty to keep me busy and inspire the creative juices.

When they are cold, which is most of the time, long months go by with nothing new coming in. Sometimes it makes me wonder if this site is still appreciated at all. Cost is relative. When things are busy, then I feel good about this site and my resolve is firmed up. When things are slow, I sometimes wonder if I should scale it back. Some of my more ambitious ideas for collecting and sharing family history could not be realized unless I knew that a significant portion of the family would help support me. In terms of sharing stories, research and photographs, and also in terms of the occasional donation to help keep the lights on.

If I were actually getting paid to do this work, then the subject matter experts (that being you) would submit new material more often and the updates would be more timely, just like all the other professional websites out there. But this web site gets new materials infrequently, and the work is done by just little old me. Well, not so little actually, but definitely this web site is the work of just one man. Plus, I am the only one paying the bills, so unless you want to ante up to help keep the lights on, then you can just sit tight until I get around to it. Or a Round Tuit if you have one, because I lost mine. :o)

So, please be patient. In fact, you have no other option unless you want to submit to the "who cares" camp, as mentioned by our frustrated cousin, and just not visit the website anymore. New information will get posted -- all of it -- and that will get done as time permits.

If I happen to succumb to my human side and forget to do something, I will appreciate a kindly reminder. Kind words will be met with a helpful attitude.

Look forward now, to the resumption of work on the Research from Deb Wake, now that it has come to my attention again. For that reminder, I gratefully thank my esteemed cousin.

Yours in kinship,

GEDCOM updated and password changed

The update was complete at 10:21AM on October 17, 2006.

Yes, the time has come to change the password. You will need to head over to the Forum and log in so that you can obtain the new GEDCOM password. That forum is located under Genealogy and is labeled Family Tree GEDCOM [private-hidden]. You will not even see it unless you are logged in, but once you are there you will be able to see the new names listed in the GEDCOM file. We now have over 9900 names listed.

To add your own family, or to update your entry, please head over to our Contact Us form, look for the link on the left for the GEDCOM Form, and fill in whatever you need to send to Joe Clarkson Carpenter. he will add your info to the GEDCOM file and it will appear after the next update.

Medical History Article

Some of you may have read the story on our articles page about how George "Station" Carpenter is reputed to have been in attendance as the historic surgery that led to Doctor Ephraim McDowell gaining reknown for having performed the first abdominal surgery.

I have been in touch with Alberta Moynahan, the genealogist at McDowell House Museum, and she has promised to send me some materials. Perhaps she will provide evidence that will help to clarify the facts of the story.

I have also asked for permission to continue using the image that is posted in the article now. It is a painting that was commissioned to commemorate the historic event that may have been attended by our ancestor.

Forum members can contact each other

I know that some of you have expressed an interest in a family wide mailing list. However the decision was made to not publish that list because a lot of people are also interested in protecting their privacy.  However, family members who are registered in the Forum can send Email to each other without knowing the actual Email address of the recipient.

Just look in the Forum memberlist, which is only visible after a registered member logs in, and look for the name of the person you want to contact. Then click on the little icon that resembles the word EMAIL. A message form will pop up and you can type your message. The recipient can then choose whether or not to respond and share their real Email address with you.

Now some people have chosen to hide their Email address. You can still send them a private message in the forum and they should get that when they log back in to the forum eventually.

I know it is not quite as easy as a family directory, but it is a very fine solution and one of the more substantial benefits of this web site and membership in the forum.

If you are not yet a member of the Forum, then head over to the Contact Us page, fill in the GEDCOM Form with information that will prove your relation to George Zimmerman, and then you can register for the Forum. Forum membership will be approved after your name is connected to the Family Tree GEDCOM.

Thank you,

: Joseph Willam Carpenter

New recipes database - check it out under "Recipes"

There is also a new recipes database. if you have a favorite you would like to share, then take a moment and enter it into the new recipes database. You can do this from your browser... it is pretty neat. It will be even better when it is filled with tasty recipes! As with the rest of this site, YOU are the primary creators of content. The idea to post recipes on this website has been around for a long time, and we have seen some posted in the Forum. Keep posting things like that to the forum, then also post the recipe to the new database. Eventually we will compile a collection of the foods that Carpenter's love to eat. I will convert the existing recipes to the database, so you do not need to resubmit recipes. If every one posts at least one recipe, and hopefully more, then we should get a pretty good collection going. If you have an especially large recipe collection, I can even create a special category just for you... -- JWC

Wow! I mean... Wow...

<img vspace="5" hspace="10" align="left" src="http://josephwcarpenter.smugmug.com/photos/100375592-S.png" alt="William Henry Harrison Carpenter" />I am evaluating the SmugMug photo gallery. You will seek a link added to the masthead of the website for Photographs (x-link).

I finally have a way to share all those photographs I scanned at the reunion, and those that have been sent to me since the Reunion. Thanks for that, by the way. I was a bit discouraged for a while, but now I can see that this much anticipated branch of the project is getting off the ground. The solution I found is not free, but they are doing a great job and unlimited hosting means that I can keep adding photos indefinitely.

Those of you who have photographs and have been meaning to send them to me for inclusion on the website. Now is the time. I have room to post it all. What you see posted on the Photographs (x-link) page is actually a live link to my own SmugMug account. I will host the reunion photos there. They have kindly provided me with a means to integrate my own website header so the service integrates in an almost seamless way. I am very happy with the results.

If you have an article that would be set off by a nice photo, then there is no longer any limitation on that. With this Photo Gallery, I have much more flexibility with using photos in the design of the website. If you have reunion or genealogy related photographs, please let me host them. Contact me via my Email form and I can give you instructions on how to send me copies of your original files.

Okay, time to get back to it. Hope you all like the latest changes. If you do, brag about my work in the Forum. If not, then tell me what you think in an Email.

NEW -- Update on Reunion Group Photo

Update for October 2, 2006
I spoke with Kathleen again, and she gave me new information about the photographs. The photographer got the photographs back, the second time, and is prepared to send them out again.
Several events have contributed to the long delay. The initial delay was due to complications following the birth of his new child. I do not know all the details, but the condition was serious and required his attentiveness. I am sure can all appreciate the importance of putting family first, and even now, they may benefit from your prayers and/or postive thoughts.

The additional delay came because as Chris prepared to send out the photographs a few weeks ago, he noticed the entire batch of prints were of less than satisfactory quality. So he resubmitted them to the lab to correct their mistake. The bottom line is that this was never forgotten, and was only delayed due to unforeseeable circumstances. The better way to be is to adopt a charitable attitude and be happy when the photographs do come in the mail soon.

Thank you all for your patience, and for your understanding.

Update for September 17, 2006
Several people have written asking about the group photo from the reunion. We have an official answer now from Kathleen Griffinl. She posted her reply to this question in the Family Forum. I am reposting it now for the benefit of those of you who have not yet joined the forum.

The delay of receiving the photos was partially because Joe [Clarkson] and I did not correct some errors in identification as soon as we should and then, Chris [the photographer] became the proud father of a little baby girl named Megan and took some time off.

However, I talked with Chris last week and he was to have mailed the photos the next day. I will email him this weekend and see what's happening.

There is no additional charge for the photograph; the cost was included as part of your registration.

Many changes this week

The website has been getting another face lift as I work to better integrate several new technologies.
1. You will see tremendous improvements in the new Articles page, and the Email Form. Both are easier to use, and easier for me to manage. 2. I now have the ability to post articles, then also share that out so that the original authors can retain the ability to edit and add to articles online if they want to. 3. I discontinued the Traditions page, which was sort of lost anyway, and made a new page for Recipes. I integrated the Stories into the Articles page. As the site grows, I will adjust that again if necessary. Again, the idea is to make it all easier to view and navigate. You can get to everything from the masthead at the top without getting lost.

The Genealogy page and the Reunion2006 pages have not yet been updated. The Genealogy page will be updated soon, and I may move the Reunion2006 page to a new subpage called Archives. That way the information will remain available, but it is time to let that become history.

I have an article on Cemetery Maintenance, that will be posted soon. If I get the SMugMug service discussed below, then I will link those images in.

Finally, I am looking hard at a great image database service called SmugMug http://www.smugmug.com/browse/Genealogy to get an idea what it might offer us. This would allow all of the features that I want to provide, and eliminate the storage issues. It would also incur an additional expense, so I will have to think about it. If I decide to do this, I will organize all photos given to me and make them available to the website. This could be a great thing.

Mary Ann Hormuth and Kathleen Carpenter Griffin The image to the left is of Mary Ann Hormuth and Kathleen Carpenter Griffin. This photo was taken by Elizabeth mae Knight, who kindly sent her photos to me on CD and now has a gallery in our new Phot Gallery. This is just one example of how it might work. The image to the left resides in my SmugMug account, then I linked to it from the LiveJournal. Smug Mug is a very attractive service and would solve several problems with one solution.

More later.

Forum now integrated into website

I found a short tutorial on PHP and figured out the code to integrate the forum into the main website. Now it is possible to click back and forth between them without the frame. This will make the forum much easier to read.

You can check that out anytime, like now: http://www.carpenter-zimmerman.org/reunion/forum/index.php

Remember, after you log in, you can click back and forth between the forum and the rest of the website so long as the same browser session remains active.

I will be working on linking the GEDCOM to the forum registration so that will make the log in easier for that as well.

YDNA Project Results

I joined the Y-DNA project to help confirm the male decendancy of the Carpenter line. The more people who join this project, then more confident the results will be. I am a descendant of George Zimmerman through George Carpenter Jr. and also John I. The Y-DNA results showed a strong result for my having descended from Switzerland. Beyond that, the genetic information was somewhat complicated.

I am attempting to gain a better understanding of all this now, and will report later in more detail. I can say already that there is a strong case for the connection to Switzerland. There are three people in the project with a genetic drift of 1, which means we are definitely related. Now if more Carpenter male descendants will join the project, we can increase the confidence in this result.

For more information on the Y-DNA project, see the link on the Genealogy page of the website.

Time to move on now, what is next?

Reunion 2006 is over. The general idea now is to continue to share what others have learned about family history on this site. I will continue to work with the family genealogists to report the interesting facts and findings concerning our family history. The forums remain open to all.

The underwhelming response following the reunion leads me to believe that either A) people do not care, or B) people are too timid to share what they know, or C) people do not know how to go about this. I will revise the website to allow for each of these possibilities.

I will soon post the new information coming in from Thom Flory concerning his trip to Switzerland this summer. I will revises several of the forms, to make submitting stories and genealogy facts as simple as possible. Then perhaps we will see some involvement from the rest. If not, then we will see less information, but of higher quality, and that is fine too.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I cannot just make this stuff up. I need you all to tell your stories. If you do not, then the stories die with the teller, lost to future generations.

LiveJournal now doubles as webmaster announcements

Now that the 2006 reunion is past, there are not too many Reunion Planner announcements. I have decided to move the Reunion Planner News LiveJournal to the home page so that the latest news about the website and for things pertaining to the family business can be updated more quickly. I will post there myself because we really do not have any active reunion planners right now. Anybody interested in helping out with the next reunion let me know and I will give you a way to contact the family.

Joe Clarkson still maintains the contact database as well as the master GEDCOM database. He can still be reached through the Contact Us links, all over this website. Just send your additions and corrections to the Reunion Planners mail form, and he will get the message.

I will be updating the GEDCOM data form to make it more comprehensive and also setting up a more easily understood Contacts page with links to various people who are active within the family genealogy efforts.

We do not, not do we plan to have, a master list of all who attended the reunion. Not everyone wanted to be on a master list, and many expressed concerns about privacy.

However, you can still contact anyone who is registered with the Forum by sending them a message. Just log in to the Forum and look for the members list. You can send any registered member an Email from there by clicking on the Email button next to their name.

There are a lot of questions about things like that. I will be adding a FAQ to the web site to accumulate answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). No question is a bad question if you do not already know the answer. With a FAQ, new users will be able to get up to speed more quickly by simply reading the FAQ.

Some of you may be wondering what is going on with all the new plans I spoke about at the reunion. I definitely still have plans to build a server to host a larger website, and add many new features. However, the almost total absence of submissions from people who attended the reunion really took the wind out of my sails.

I am settling in once again to a more moderate pace, which is just as well. I am doing most of the work myself, which means that my motivation is affected directly by the willingness of others to contribute. If I do not see much interest in participation then I will naturally slow the planning down until I save up the money to buy the hardware.

Those of you who have submitted information from the reunion, thank you. I will take what I have and begin work updating this web site soon.

Here is what is new...

I received word from Thom Flory about his trip to Switzerland, and I will post his write up and photos when they arrive.

I submitted my own sample of DNA to the Y-DNA Project in hopes that it helps make the connection to our ancestors in Switzerland. That has not come in yet so when it does I will write something about it.

This website does not make itself up. I need more people to step up and share what you know. Did you go to the reunion? Do you know a story about the family? Just write me an Email or a letter and talk about it. If you prefer not to be named, I will post it anonymously.

Fall is almost upon us, and the new school year has arrived. For most people this means less time. But for me, it means more because I get more done when I am busy. I will look to update various areas of the website in the coming weeks. July and August gave me a chance to catch up at my paying job, and now I will get back in the saddle again to update this web site.

Reunion Meltdown

From the Carpenter-Zimmerman Forum -- Reunion 2006 Tell us about your experience
Posted: Wed Jul 05, 2006 22:01 Post subject: Reunion Meltdown
By: KathleenG (KathleenG), Reunion Planner

Hi Everyone,

Three weeks have passed since we have been in Kentucky for the 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Reunion. I have finally managed to get thank you notes written to many of those wonderful citizens of Hustonville and Lincoln County who contributed so much to the success of our 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman reunion--and I am about to get all of our bills paid.

I cannot wait to see the group photograph. It should be arriving in your mail any time now. If you would like to have an extra photograph as a gift for someone who did not make it to the reunion, let me know.

If any one would like to have an extra water bottle or two with Carpenter Reunion 2006 printed on it, let Joe know and he will mail it (them) to you.

While it is on your minds, we are wondering if any of you have any suggestions or recommendations for the next Reunion.

Just in case, anyone is interested, Joe and I have worked together as Reunion Planners for the past two reunions. For each event, we have started more than a year ahead of time--brainstorming for the most part, then getting to work. Having the website has been immensely helpful and has saved so many hours and lots of money paying for snailmail. Please continue to keep Joe up to date with any address or email changes for yourself or others in the family.

For the 2006 Reunion, we looked at the experiences of 2001 and decided we might enjoy tours that were less crowded--so we planned for two tours. With the help of Allan Leach, we provided better and more detailed maps of the tours. We found hotel accommodations with better mattresses. We tried to provide for more opportunities for sharing stories and experiences and just getting to know one another. We worked hard to keep costs at a reasonable level.

Joseph has said he will make CDs if you will get your photographs to him. Do you think it might be a nice keepsake to have a CD with lots and lots of Reunion photographs? You need to get in touch with him if you want to make this happen.

What was your favorite part? Did you meet some new cousins? Did you find a family resemblance in cousins you may have met for the first time? Did you notice personality similarities? Mannerisms? What would you have changed about the Reunion? Your input will be so helpful to the next Reunion Planners. Maybe you will want to volunteer for that job.

Do stay in touch. Send any family news to the website--new babies, weddings, funerals, graduations.

See you next time.

Reunion Musings

Hi, Everyone,

I have been hearing from several of my Carpenter cousins about the Reunion. It sounds as though you enjoyed the 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Reunion as much as I did. Even the weather cooperated just as it did in 2001.

I have talked with Chris Floyd, the nice photographer from Centre College in Danville. Remember Chris, the man on the roof of Ft. Harrod shelter. He says the photographs have turned out very well and are about ready to be mailed. If you know anyone who was not at the Reunion who would like to order a photograph or if anyone would like to have an extra one, just let me know. A photograph of all your Carpenter cousins for someone who was not able to attend will make a very nice Christmas gift, don't you think? They will be $20. each including the mailing if they are ordered immediately. If Chris has to make additional prints and extra trips to the post office, the photographs will be a little more expensive..

I have talked with Allan Leach, the historian who led those great tours. He was very pleased with the enthusiasm of our group.

What was your favorite experience at the Reunion? Your favorite meal? Your favorite site on the Tour?

Any interest in having another reunion? Any ideas about another Reunion in a year or so? Any volunteers to be on a Reunion committee?

I still cannot believe how welcoming the Hustonville School and Hustonville Christian Church were to "The Carpenters". Neither Joe nor I made those bulletin boards or signs at either place; our Hustonville friends did all of that.

I cannot give you an exact number of participants at the Reunion. Several people did not sign up in my "Master Planner" at the Cafeteria and several others did not register at all. I do not have addresses or genealogical lines for these people and will not be able to get photographs to them. If any of you know any of these cousins, please let them know how to contact me.

I have started a Carpenter Station Cemetery topic on the Forum. I think it is important to proceed with the recommendations made by Allan Leach at the Reunion. We have also been in contact with Mary McCormick whose mother was one of a very few who made the initial plea for funds to care for the cemetery stones, erect the fence and memorial that we all saw last week. Mary also conducted a more recent fund raiser in order to have the funds to continute to maintain the cemetery. I believe that Mary's recommendations should be given considerable weight because of her past involvement and experience.

Currently, there is not enough income from the designated CDs to continue maintenance on the Carpenter Station cemetery in 2006. That means that it will not be mowed until after the first of the year. We need quite a bit more money and on-site management in order to take proper care of this cemetery. What do you think?

Use the forum or email Joe or me.

Stay in touch.

Reunion Time!

Hello, Carpenters,

In less than a week, 60+ Carpenters and spouses will be gathering in Hustonville, KY, where our ancestors claimed their Revolutionary War land grants.

We will meet some cousins for the first time and will renew acquaintances with cousins we have met in the past. We will share stories and photographs and genealogy.

Nine young people, from the ages of ten to fifteen, will be celebrating with us. Deb Wake has planned some special activities for our kids.

Allan Leach will lead two tours this year--one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Allan has also agreed to talk about the tour sites at our Friday evening meal at the Hustonville cafeteria.

On that same evening, Lynn Shea is going to talk about "Our Valley Forge Connection"--the research done by our cousin, Jim Morrison, documenting Georg Zimmerman-Carpenter's presence at Valley Forge and death in March of 1778. This is truly significant research and we are very grateful to Jim for this important work.

Now--if only we could learn something about George's first wife!

The ladies of First Christian Church will again prepare a memorable meal--to be served in the basement of the church on Saturday at noon.

After lunch, we will spent an hour and a half telling stories, reviewing historic events, discussing the DNA project, and talking about the website and its future. We will also begin to think about the next Reunion.

We will gather at 5:30 at the Shelter at Old Fort Harrod to have our Reunion photograph made and will enjoy a barbecue supper afterwards.

On Sunday, those who wish will attend church with a picnic to follow at the Hustonville Picnic area to be shared with our friends from First Christian church and, if we are lucky, share potluck with the delicious food from Saturday's lunch as well as other tasty contributions.

The second Allan-Leach tour will be after lunch on Sunday.

We will miss those of you who are not going to be at the 2006 Reunion and encourage you to stay in touch.

Family was so important to my parents and family is important to me. We can be so proud of our wonderful heritage.

Stay in touch!

Reunion Countdown

Hi, Carpenters,

We will be gathering in Hustonville, KY, in 32 days for the 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Reunion. So far, it looks as though we will be having between 50 and 70 participants.

Very Important! Tomorrow will be the last day that we will be getting the special rate at Hampton Inn. If you are interested in staying there, better not wait.

Joe and I have been working on name tags and fine-tuning the agenda. Joseph is putting last-minute touch-ups on the website. It looks as though our long-awaited reunion is going to happen!

Remember to bring family artifacts--photographs, Bibles, quilts, scrapbooks, tatting, etc. Joseph is bringing a scanner so that he can scan photographs and Bible records, etc., which can be put on a CD. I think there will be a minimal charge for each CD just to cover expenses for anyone who may wish to order one. Photographs fade, Bibles fall apart, but these CDs will last forever--a lasting record of our family.

Remember the giant wall chart we had at Shaker Village in 2001. There are over 8,000 names in the data base. This is too much material for us to put on paper so Joseph and Joe are working out details to have the information projected from a laptop. We really need to have your input with the information that has been recorded. We are asking everyone to check your branch of the family tree for completeness and correctness.

We continue to encourage each Reunion participant to think of stories to share during the Reunion, especially on Saturday afternoon.

The picnic on Sunday will be at Hustonville's Picnic Shelter on the right as you come into town and will be shared with the folks at Hustonville Christian Church who will bring potluck from Saturday's lunch. My husband is especially hopeful that there will be an extra piece of pie or so left over.

Again, please call or email Joe Clarkson or me if you have concerns or questions.

I can't wait for the Reunion--to see those of you I have met and to meet new cousins!

Countdown to 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Union

Hello, Carpenter Descendants,

As of this moment, we have 59 registrations for the Reunion that will begin in 33 days.

Important! If you plan to come to the Reunion and stay at the Hampton Inn, those special rates will expire on May 15--in two days.

If you have had any problems with the registration, there were new people on the desk last week who did not have the entire picture. That has been all straightened out now.

I spoke with Allan Leach last week and he is ready for the Carpenters to come to Hustonville. We will have maps of the area and for the tours for each of you this time. It is still not definite that we will have two tours since there are fewer of us than anticipated when we did initial planning. Please email or call if you have any questions.

I guess you are getting tired of this old song--but we have had very little response from any of you with family stories, recipes, history, etc.. Remember, if you want to hear Carpenter stories from other folks, you might want to think about sharing one or two of your stories.

Do you like to sing, play an instrument, or have another talent. There will be opportunities for this at the Shelter at Old Ft. Harrod State Park on Saturday. If you have folding chairs, think about bringing a couple along if you are going to be driving. Those benches at the Park can get pretty hard.

Sunday's picnic after church will be at the Picnic Shelter in Hustonville. Some of the church people will be sharing potluck with us.

I am getting excited about the Reunion. It is going to be so good to see all of you.

recent additions

I added the Will of Elizabeth Boyer Carpenter, and updated the style a little of Conrad Carpenter's will as well. I changed the colors a bit to make the scans and the text stand out more.

I also found some old photographs that I believe were sent to me by Kathleen Carpenter Griffin. I set up a temp page for her to view those at:
http://www.carpenter-zimmerman.org/reunion/unidentified/

Earlier today I removed the 'Simple Firewall' hack from the forum. This was the little gray ENTER button that people had to press to get into the forums. It was messing up the links for activation, and also created some confusion.

On a brighter note, I think some of the genealogists might be finally warming up to the web site and the forums.

Carpenter Reunion 2006 - Deadline Extended

Hi, Everyone,

Registrations are trickling in. We are extending the May 1 deadline because we are not going to need so much time for final details as originally thought. We are getting close to 50 registrations now. Do we have yours? We will be accepting registrations until the second week of June, but it will save a lot of last minute work if you can get your check and registration sent in earlier.

Please think about a family story that you might be willing to share during the Historical Presentation on Saturday afternoon. This will be a fun and informal time of sharing--a time of being with extended family, sharing and making memories. This is your reunion so please consider participating in all facets of it.

Do we have any musicians out there? Storytellers? Clowns? Genealogists with data to share? We need your help with the Historical Presentation and with entertainment at the barbecue. Any flower arrangers to help with table decorations? We are going to need some volunteer help during the reunion with registration, table decorations, name tags, greeters, entertainment, go-fers and other jobs. Let us know if you might be available.

Joseph has been putting in some long hours working on the web site and Joe Clarkson has just sent some more data for the GEDCOM. Please check the web page often. Lots is going on, the site is user friendly and there is lots of information there. We NEED to know if the information we have about your family is correct and complete. Please take the time to check it out. Also, please consider sending something (a story? a recipe?) to put on the web site.

We hope that some of you will be interested enough in the web site to help us figure out how we can keep it going like forever. For now, Joseph is donating his expertise and web space so there is no cost except for an relatively small annual fee that, I think is for the domain. At the Reunion, we will be talking about the future of the web page and the GEDCOM data. Where do we go from here? Do we want to have another Reunion in five years? two years? Ever? Do we want to continue the web page? Does anyone want to help with planning the next reunion? Where do we want to have it? Virginia? Shenandoah Valley? What do you want? This is your family and your reunion ( I say again!).

Bob and I are going to be on a short vacation for a week or so. I hope my mailbox is packed full of registrations when we get back.

Time To Get Those Registrations In

Hi, Carpenter Cousins,

The registrations are slowly beginning to arrive. Check my math, but I think that countdown to the 2006 Carpenter Family Reunion is 57 days. Please go ahead and send in your registrations so that we will be able to finalize our planning.

We have a photographer lined up who has a much better system for getting the right name with the right person. That will save me hours of work, I promise you!

I still don't see any new family stories or recipes on our great website. Please consider taking a few minutes to share your family stories with the rest of us. I will be glad to work with you to get your stories ready for the website, if you would like any help.

Have you seen the new updated genealogy records on the www.carpenter-zimmerman.org/reunion website? We must surely be one of the better researched families on the universe. Please take the time to learn your way around the website. I promise you there is a wealth of information there of interest to anyone descended from George Zimmerman Carpenter. Check out the genealogy info to be sure that information about your line is complete and correct. This is all going to be on a giant wall chart at the Hustonville School Cafeteria wall during the Reunion and we want it to be right.

My nephew, Joseph Carpenter, is the webmaster for our website. He is a great teacher and so patient. He and I literally spent hours on the telephone last year, while he painstakingly talked me through some computer problems I was having. Please! if you have any problems accessing the website, registering, checking out the genealogy files, etc., just let Joe, Joseph or me know and we (probably Joseph) will do our best to walk you through any process that is giving you trouble. Remember, this is the first time we have had a website and we are all learning as we go. Just try not to get flustered--it can be done!

Allan Leach has contacted the landowners of the property we will be visiting on the tours on Saturday or Sunday. He has also supplied us with maps that will be very helpful (better than in 2001) as we travel through Lincoln County on the tours. There are two maps--one if of the area and the other is a land-grant map showing where our ancestors claimed their land grants and built their homes more than 200 years ago. Joseph will be putting the maps on the website so that you can download copies to take with you to the Reunion.

We are also working on a speaker system for the tours so that we will be better able to hear everything that Allan has to say. For this reunion, Allan is going to be speaking at the dinner on Friday evening, telling us in better detail the significance of the areas we will be touring. He is so enthusiastic and so knowledgeable. I have said before--he knows more about Carpenter history than anyone.

Plan to bring any items of historical significance that you may have--family Bibles, quilts, photographs, bonnets. In 2001, Joe Ford and Alene Carpenter brought a clay pipe that belonged to Sallie Powell, daughter of Margaret Carpenter and Lindsay Powell--my great-great grandmother. Wow!

On Sunday afternoon, Father's Day, after church at Hustonville Christian Church and before Allan Leach's second tour, we will be having a picnic lunch at the Hustonville Picnic area. This will be a good opportunity to exchange email addresses, phone numbers, snail mail addresses with your cousins.

I hope we will have a great turnout. We are going to have so much fun. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the Carpenters, to meet new cousins and to renew friendships with those you have met in the past.

I can't wait to see you all!

Kathleen

Spring is on the way!

Hi, All You Carpenter Cousins,

Spring is slowly coming to North Carolina and that means that summer--and the 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Family Reunion is just around the corner.

Joseph William Carpenter, our webmaster, is back from his fishing and camping expeditions, so you will want to plan to spend some time checking out the website. There will be lots of additions. Allan Leach has given us permission to print some of his newspaper articles on the website. He has also sent along some maps that will be helpful to print out to take along on the tours on Saturday or Sunday. There is already quite a bit to check out and more will be coming.

We really, really want to encourage each of you to write a story (or stories) about your family that can go on the website. Do you remember anything about the Depression when you were growing up? What about your Christmas celebrations? Did you have to walk a zillion miles to school in subzero weather? What were your daily chores around the house? What has it been like for you to be a Carpenter? What has it been like for you to be a Carpenter spouse? How in the world can we make this your website if no one sends anything to us to put in it? What do YOU want the website to be like?

Have you seen the GEDCOM files put together by Joe (Clarkson) Carpenter? Have you checked it out to see everyone in your line is where she or he should be, checked dates and places for accuracy, discovered any omissions?

I just talked with the Hampton Inn people in Danville and things are beginning to fill up. Please make your reservations now so that we can reserve more rooms if we need to do that.

I think this reunion is going to be even better than the 2001 Reunion. We have lined up several of your cousins who are going to play music, discuss genealogical research, tell some stories and share information. Registrations are being received. have you sent yours to me yet? Do you have any questions?

I can hardly wait to see you all. Only 70 days left until our 2006 Carpenter-Zimmerman Reunion.See you in Kentucky in June!

Reunion Update

Hello, everyone,

Registrations are beginning to come in! I want to encourage everyone to go ahead and send in your registrations and make your hotel reservations. We have two months until we will get together for our 2006 Carpenter Reunion.

I have just had a great week with my great-niece who visited from New Mexico. We played tourists all week and I loved showing off Asheville. I think she had a pretty good time; I know that I did!

Some not-so-good news. I had a call from Beverly Neal, Milton's wife, last week. She wanted to let us know that they are looking forward to the Reunion and hoped they can make it. Milton has had a possible recurrence of cancer and may be very involved with treatment of that. Please hold Milton and the family in your thoughts and prayers.

Everything is lined up with the photographer. Lynn Shea put me in touch with the photographer at Centre College and--guess what! He has a system for lining up everyone for a large photograph which includes a way to get everyone's name right. Remember what a time we had with that in 2001?

By the way, if any of you are interested in staying in the home of a Hustonville resident instead of in a motel, there may be a few people who are interested in having a Carpenter stay with them. Let me know.

Kathleen

Looking forward to seeing all of you in Kentucky in June.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Hi, Everyone!

Happy St. Patrick's Day--a day late.

Welcome a new Carpenter into the world. Michael Patrick Carpenter was born yesterday to Jonathan and Jenean Carpenter, grandson to William Hugh and Patricia Carpenter. (Geo. II and John lines)

Some of you have already sent in your Registration and Activity sign-up forms. Don't forget to let us know which one (or more) of George Zimmerman Carpenter's children is your ancestor so that we can have that on your nametag. The deadline for registration is May 1, 2006. Currently, we have received ten registrations.

Please go ahead and make your reservations for accommodations early. The deadline for the special rate at Hampton Inn is May 15. Over 100 Carpenter Cousins and families participated in the 2001 Reunion and we have many more names and addresses in the data base for the 2006 Reunion.

If any of you are aware of Carpenter cousins who have not received a reunion notice, please let us know right away. If anyone has an email address that has been changed or added, please let us know. Email instead of snail mail saves a lot of money. The following snail mail notices have been returned as of today. If you know the whereabouts--addresses, phone numbers, or emails of any of these folks--please let me know at grettakg@carpenter-zimmerman.org.-- Louise Bell, Emily Carpenter, Joe Carpenter (Oregon address returned), Wallace Dunning, Janie Glover, Lucille Kirkland,Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller, Christine Ray, Brian Schaffner, David Shaver, Dutch Shaver, and Jane Thomas.

I talked with Allan Leach last evening and he is busy contacting the property owners of the sites on the tour route to let them know of our coming visit--and to get permission for us to come! He is working on maps for each of us to have prior to the tours so that we can, hopefully, follow along on the map as we tour. We are also working on a speaker system in hopes that we can better hear what Allan has to say. Another opportunity to visit with Allan is on Friday evening. After dinner, Allan is going to talk about the various places we will be going on the Tours.

Has everyone had a chance to check out the Family tree data on the GEDCOM files on the web page? We hope that each of you will take the time to review your own family line and let us know if you have any additions or corrections. If you have any source data, we can get that information on the web page as well--to share with all of your cousins.
